Air New Zealand has announced that it plans to temporarily boost the number of flights that it offers to one of its key destinations - Los Angeles will see more Air New Zealand flights from mid-August.
In what now seem like the carefree days before the pandemic and before yet another war took over our TV screens, Air New Zealand was set to launch one of the longest flights in the world between Auckland and New York. Then the world put up the closed sign and the plan was mothballed. Now, with New Zealand taking its first tentative steps towards reopening, the Auckland to New York route is back on the agenda and scheduled for later this year.
Well, this is new. I've heard of airlines cutting routes because of COVID and I've heard of airlines altering their schedules because of COVID, but this is the first time that I've heard of an airline altering how a route is flown because it believes there's a safer way for it to operate while the pandemic is still raging.
Air New Zealand appears to believe that there are a significant number of flyers for whom its standard Economy Class seats are too tight and for whom the cost of Premium Economy is too high and it plans to monetize this group - welcome to "Economy Stretch".
The latest Air New Zealand Christmas video ("The Nicest Christmas Ever") is now available to watch and, this year, the video manages to combine a bit of festive spirit, a bit of Christmas tradition and a not-so-subtle bit of mockery that will probably go down well with quite a few people (and no doubt enrage a few too).
Air New Zealand is just one of many airlines offering a variety of deals across this Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend and, PR stunts aside, I think the Premium Economy deal currently on offer is the pick of the airline's offers.
Air New Zealand is the latest airline to announce that it will be launching an ultra haul flight using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner as the airline schedules service between Auckland and Chicago. Ultra long-haul routes are now slowly becoming more common but the aircraft that operate them vary significantly and it's worth taking a closer look at what Air New Zealand offers before you think about trying this route out.
Delta is very good at letting us all know when it's adding new routes and expanding its network but it's definitely not the best at giving us the news when the contrary is true. In the latest set of updates one of Delta's routes to Europe is noticeably absent from the schedules and there has been no word from Delta as to why this may be.
A round up of some of the smaller bits of travel news I've noticed over the past week that don't warrant a blog post of their own but that could be useful nonetheless. Included Air New Zealand announcing the introduction of WiFi onboard, Hyatt offering bonus points in Las Vegas, JAL partnering with Priority Pass and more.
A quick reminder that Air New Zealand (UK) are having a Cyber Monday sale today where they will be offering round-trip fares between London Heathrow and Los Angeles for just £199.
