The Citi Prestige Card must be one of the most highly devalued cards of recent years (it’s gone from being a “must-have” card to a card whose existence can, for some, be hard to justify) so it’s nice to be able to confirm that the card is bringing back a very useful benefit that we first saw in 2020.

Traditionally, the Citi Prestige card offers a $250 annual travel credit which covers most things from airfares to cruises to cycle hire but with the pandemic not showing many signs of going away, a travel credit isn’t something that a lot of cardholders are finding particularly useful right now…and Citi gets that.

Citi has now updated the main Citi Prestige Card information page to confirm that for the whole of 2021, purchases made with a Citi Prestige card at supermarkets and restaurants (including takeout) will count toward the card’s $250 annual travel credit.

Travel spending will continue to count towards the credit too but cardholders can now be sure of being able to use up the statement credit even if they don’t spend a dime on travel in 2021.

For some cardholders this probably won’t be a big deal, but with the Citi Prestige card charging a hefty $495 annual fee, it’s good to know that at least $250 of that annual fee can be recouped by using the Prestige card to pay for non-luxury items that would have had to have been purchased one way or another (e.g. essential groceries). In times like these, that can be pretty useful.

Bottom Line

If you hold the Citi Prestige Card Citi has got some good news for you – the $250 travel credit that the card offers as part of its benefits package can, in 2021, be used to offset spending made at restaurants and supermarkets.
